    As a Research Technologist, the successful candidate will join NOVA Chemicals Polyethylene Product and Catalyst R&D department to conduct work in the field of polymer characterization as a member of the Analytical Testing Services team. Assignments will include a range of activities that involve thermal characterization of polyolefins. This is an entry level. NOVA Chemicals will provide extensive training to the successful candidate.

     

    Responsibilities:

    Analytical Chemistry:

    • Perform testing on equipment such as:
      • Capillary Rheometers
      • Rotational Rheometers
    • Differential Scanning Calorimeters (DSC)
    • Analyzing data and reporting results using a LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System);
    • Sample and waste management.

     

    General:

    • Handle and prepare samples for characterization / assessment;
    • Maintain accurate records of laboratory work;
    • Document analytical procedures, results and observations, write and contribute to reports describing results, and interpreting data;
    • Contribute to standard operating procedures and laboratory test procedures;
    • Maintain laboratory equipment;
    • Present work activities and progress to work team and leadership;
    • Understand and apply Responsible Care principles, practices and procedures.

    Qualifications: 

    The successful candidate will possess a Bachelor’s of Science degree (i.e. Chemistry) with 1 - 3 years of related experience or a technical diploma with 3 - 5 years of related practical experience coupled with:

     

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
    • Effective interpersonal skills to facilitate working in a multi-functional and multi-cultural environment;
    • Results oriented and the ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently;
    • Ability to work in a safe and responsible manner;
    • Demonstrated analytical, problem-solving, mechanical and computer skills.

     

    In addition, the desired candidate will have experience and knowledge in one or more of the following:

     

    • Operation and maintenance of rheometers, including calibration and general maintenance;
    • Use of haul-off accessories for melt strength testing;
    • Handling and preparation of polymer samples for analysis.
