Our Technology center at NOVA Chemicals is seeking qualified candidates for the Mechanical Engineer Analytics position.


This position is with the Fluid Dynamics team at the NOVA Chemicals Research & Technology Centre in Calgary, Alberta.
As a member of this team you will provide research support to NOVA Chemicals Olefins and
Polyolefins businesses as well as TransCanada Pipeline Ltd. through an ongoing research program.



This is a challenging position, which requires a strong knowledge of both fundamental Mechanical Engineering (thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer) and Mathematic principles (probability and statistics, computational sciences) and skills in analytical and simulation methods to carry out research projects in related areas.

Typical tasks may include but are not limited to:

  • Initiate and lead research projects related to ongoing and new initiatives/programs
  • Develop descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive models using either commercial software or developing algorithms and codes to solve specific operational and/or business related problems.
  • Identify and propose new technologies as they become available
  • Ensure accuracy of results. Identify unusual trends. Recommend and take agreed upon corrective actions;
  • Suggest improvements to numerical approach, equipment, procedures and processes;

Prepare internal technical reports and external papers for conferences and journal publications.



The successful candidate will have a PhD (or MSc with >5 years of related experience) in Mechanical Engineering or Applied Science or equivalent with a strong academic background in mathematics or equivalent. In Canada, registered Engineer-In-Training (EIT) with relevant provincial association is highly desirable. 

  • Preference will be given to candidates demonstrating excellent academic records and achievements.* PLEASE INCLUDE A COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS WITH RESUME. 
  • A very solid understanding of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, process simulation, numerical methods and heat and mass transfer.
  • Experience with advance simulation and modelling techniques in fluids, heat and mass transfer.
  • Experience with applying statistics or other mathematical techniques to optimize processes
  • Proficiency in computer programming in one or more of the following language: Python, R, C++, C#.
  • Proficiency in building statistical and algorithmic models with complex and large datasets, including but not limited to: supervised statistical learning, clustering, natural language processing, data visualization and deep learning.
  • Experience in the following will be an asset:
    • Analytics: PCA/PLS, proMV, CVE, MLA and/or
    • Solid mechanics/FEA: ANSYS Mechanics and/or
  • Results orientated with an understanding and utilization of processes and procedures.
  • Demonstrate a continuous drive to improve and is able to challenge the status quo.
  • Ability to work safely, effectively and independently in team environment.
  • Effective in team interactions and relations.
  • Excellent oral & written communication skills both internal and external to the organization.
