Our Technology center at NOVA Chemicals is seeking qualified candidates for the following role: Senior Research Scientist/Engineer

This position is with the Environment & Corrosion team at the NOVA Chemicals Research & Technology Centre in Calgary, Alberta.
As a member of this team you will provide research support to NOVA Chemicals Olefins and Polyolefins businesses as well as TransCanada Pipeline Ltd. through an ongoing research program.

 

Responsibilities: 

This is a challenging position, which requires a strong knowledge in the fields of metallurgy, material performance, destructive and non-destructive evaluations and strong skills in analytical, experimental and simulation methods to carry out research projects in related areas.


Typical tasks may include but are not limited to:

  • Development of solution techniques, design and construction of experiments and test rigs to solve specific problems/opportunities;
  • Ensure accuracy of results. Identify unusual trends. Recommend and take agreed upon corrective actions;
  • Suggest improvements to numerical approach, equipment, procedures and processes;
  • Coach and mentor engineers and scientist within the team.

Prepare internal technical reports and external papers for conferences and journal publications.

 

Qualifications: 

The successful candidate will posess a PhD (or MSc) in, metallurgical, chemical, or mechanical engineering or material science.  

  • Preference will be given to candidates demonstrating excellent academic records and achievements.* PLEASE INCLUDE A COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS WITH RESUME. 
  • Excellent understanding of mechanical & chemical properties of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, metallurgical characterization technique. CANDIDATES WHO ARE SELECTED FOR INTERVIEW WILL BE ASSESSED ON THEIR FUNDAMENTAL UNDERSTANDING.
  • Experience in metallurgy both from a research as well as operation with >8 years of relevant experience in petrochemical, pipeline or related industry.
  • Experience with (advanced) destructive and non-destructive techniques (e.g. failure analysis, root cause data-gathering, fit-to-service and life assessment)  
  • Experience to initiate, lead and supervise R&D projects and/or programs  
  • Experience in providing effective coaching and mentoring
  • Results orientated with an understanding and utilization of processes and procedures.
  • Demonstrate a continuous drive to improve and is able to challenge the status quo.
  • Ability to work safely, effectively and independently in team environment.
  • Effective in team interactions and relations.
  • Excellent oral & written communication skills both internal and external to the organization.
