NOVA Chemicals is looking for a Process Safety Engineer to join The Process Safety and Risk Services team at the Manufacturing West Joffre Site. This position will report to Manufacturing West Process Safety Team Leader.


The successful candidate will provide loss prevention and risk management support to the units, site, projects and corporate initiatives focused on the achievement of safe and reliable operations. You will work collectively and collaboratively with multidiscipline teams, including operations, maintenance and engineering.


This position will provide individuals with an exceptional developmental opportunity to gain Process Safety expertise, broad exposure to our organization and growth projects while interacting with a variety of disciplines, skills that can be applied to a wide range of roles within NOVA Chemicals.



  • Support qualitative and quantitative risk analysis for a variety of operational and project problems
  • Assist with the management of unit Process Hazard and Risk Analysis databases
  • Facilitate, conduct, and coach others on the use of risk analysis techniques
  • Provide technical expertise for Process Safety Ad-hoc studies and site-wide initiatives
  • Provide unit support for incident investigation
  • Conduct and support regional and corporate audit programs as part of continuous improvement initiatives
  • Act as a resource to technical staff in the application of NOVA’s Loss Prevention Standards, Responsible Care Standards and Process Safety procedures




The successful candidate will have an Engineering Degree with 5+ years of process design, operations, and maintenance or reliability experience in an industrial plant or equivalent technology environment.


Preference will be given to candidates with Chemical, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering Degrees, with ability to obtain APEGA certification as a registered Professional Engineer in the province of Alberta.


In addition, the ideal candidates will have:

  • Demonstrated solid experience with modelling, probability and statistics, and experimental design
  • Proficiency in computer programs related to data analysis
  • Understanding of Process Safety Management Systems will be an asset
  • A collaborative approach to working within multidiscipline projects and manufacturing unit teams
  • Ability to lead site or corporate wide initiatives
  • Experience with managing multiple priorities
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills
